Decima Bienal de la Habana- La Cabaña

La Bienal de la Habana es simplemente la bienal de mas merito... con un presupuesto cercano a cero, es el factor humano el que hace posible que cada dos (o tres años) artistas de Africa, Asia y los siempre olvidados paises de Centro America y el Caribe converjan con propuestas de artistas europeos y los grandes paises latinoamericanos.

Las obras en su gran mayoria aciertan y reflejan un mundo que convulsiona; que susurra, dice o grita un claro "ya no podemos seguir asi".

Vuelvo emocionalmente maltratada pero con mucha energia y mucho optimismo... mi experiencia fue mas alla de lo estetico: no fue bonita, fue valiosa.

EAT en Scope Miami 2008

Una feria y de repente hay miles de ferias... sin embargo Scope fue reconocida este anno por la frescura de sus propuestas artisticas. EAT es una obra en progreso realizada con maiz, de 3 x 250 cms. Talvez mas cercana al performance, esta obra la realice durante 6 horas mientras el publico iba y venia para ver el progreso. Fue una buena oportunidad para conversar con gente que se preocupa por diferentes temas: desde el consumo, el desperdicio a el problema de hambre y la especulacion de los precios del petroleo y la comida.

Mirando al Sur es una exposicion curada por Rosina Cazali en la cual participamos Donna Conlon (Panama), Patricia Belli y Ernesto Salmeron ( Nicaragua); Dalia Chevez, Ronald Moran y Danny Zavaleta ( El Salvador); Adan Vallecillo (Honduras); Colectivo La Torana, Rosina Galindo y Angel Poyon (Guatemala); Betsabe Romero y Miguel Angel Madrigal (Mexico).

Esta exposicion estara abierta al publico hasta el 30 de enero del 2009 en el espacio del Centro de Formacion de la Cooperacion Espanola de La Antigua.

Esta exposicion con algunas variantes itinerara hacia Honduras en febrero y a todos los otros paises Centroamericanos, Mexico y Miami. Asi que hay exposicion para rato...

Mi obra consiste en Palomitas de Maiz empacadas en plastico y la obra se llama Maiz explotado...

Action, Art, Culture, Generation

I presented three pieces at this event, one of the many parallel exhibits to Manifesta, the european biennial. It is in and around Trento inthree venues. Villazano Park, Pergine Train Station and Arte Boccanera Galeria. I was invited by Giogia Lucci and Marco Tomassinni. It was a challenge to create the 2 garden pieces in 3 days, but possible thanks to the support of asistents and professional gardners. it was a good insight into gardening and agricultural practices...very hard work!

Axis es el nombre de mi ultima exposicion individual. Para mi es un honor poder utilizar la Sala uno de este museo pues representa un reto tremendo no solo por su tamano sino tambien por la gran cantidad de exposiciones que ha albergado y la cantidad de museografias de las que ha sido parte: mi reto consistia en unificar el espacio arquitectonico con la muestra, y en la medida de la posible realizar una " obra total" que ojala no recordara a muestras anteriormente realizadas ahi. Ustedes decidan que tanto lo logre...

Situacion Especial es una exposicion en el nuevo espacio para arte contemporaneo en San Jose :.... alias EstHer.

Esta instalacion fue concebida especificamente para este espacio y un tributo al verano. Mis agradecimientos a Federico Herrero por su invitacion , y a Gloriana Brenes por su apoyo, el rondon del cierre y el gin con agua de coco...

Una feria es una feria es una feria.
Lo importante es descubrir las diferencias y saber donde esta uno... Aparte interesante toda la construccion y marana que es sostenida por la obra. Igual no me puedo quejar, comparti con artistas que aprecio mucho como Federico Herrero, Sally Smart y Clemencia Labin.

Yet the broadening of the consumer base is, and so is the inescapable truth that the trade is now substantially driven by marquee auctions and art fairs that come to feel like circuit parties for the ultrarich. The profile of an average conventioneer at Miami Basel can perhaps be deduced from the number of private jets leased to fly here this week. NetJets alone - to name a leading vendor of shared jet ownership - booked 216 flights to Miami for this year's fair, a 44 percent increase over two years ago."I'm just making the first round," said Beth Rudin DeWoody, the philanthropist and collector, on Wednesday as she power-walked the aisles of the main fair, scattering in her path the red dots that signify a work has been sold. At one booth a young California couple was mulling the purchase of a picture by the hot Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu. "How much are you asking?" the husband inquired. "Sixty," said the dealer, meaning $60,000. "Is that the only one you have?" the woman asked. "We have room in our den for two."Who knows if the Mutu was not a steal? It was big, and that is important to collectors who now inhabit houses the size of department stores. "Well, it's not Bergdorf's," said the Texas collector Becca Cason Thrash, who had just bought a Tony Cragg sculpture of heads for her 21,000-square-foot Houston mansion, where 300 can be seated for dinner. "More like a boutique."Certainly Ms. Mutu's art was far from the costliest stuff around in a fair at which a rare Blue Period Picasso was among the choicer offerings. Mr. Kuitca was unveiling "Aquarelle," a reflecting pool he created at Aqua, Mr. Robins's multimillion dollar residential development, where curb appeal has been ratcheted up with art. Richard Tuttle, for instance, installed a tiled sculpture on two poolside walls there, the tiles meant to represent a splash pattern created by a boulder dropped into the pool. The price tag is reputed to be no drop in the bucket, perhaps as much as $2 million. Mr. Kuitca's creation is a tiled depression, whose ornamentation looked like a Google Earth view of the Aqua vicinity. As the crab salad tarts were passed in the cool tropical evening and Mr. Robins showed a Shanghai investor around the place, it suddenly came clear that what the Kuitca pool most resembled, set as it was in a moat of shredded rubber mulch the artist found on eBay, was a fancy version of the tub planters one sometimes sees in rural yards. "Did you see the, uh, what was it, the rice and beans thing?" a billionaire was overheard asking later at a dinner that Tamara Mellon, the founder of the cult shoe company Jimmy Choo, gave at David Bouley Evolution. The artwork to which the man was alluding was an installation by the Costa Rican artist Lucia Madriz, a welcome mat formed of rice with a cursive inscription made using the medium of dried beans. Especially given the context, the legend on the mat - "Money Talks" - seemed beyond dispute. But as Ms. Mellon's guests tucked into lobster with vanilla-glazed turnips and parsley swirls, it struck one observer that Ms. Madriz's critique was so gentle as to be almost quaint. Since when do wealth and power settle for mere chatter? Money doesn't just talk anymore. Money screams.

Estrecho Dudoso fue un mega esfuerzo de Teoretica en coordinacion con todos los museos de Costa Rica. Yo tuve la suerte de participar y conocer artistas valiosisimos como el ecuatoriano Xavier Andrade, la puertorriquena/colombiana Carolina Caycedo, Shilpa Gupta de la India y muchos mas. Participaron Colectivos de Argentina (Pio y Gustavo) y de Brasil.
Fue una oportunidad para conocer lo que se esta haciendo y disfrutar de buen arte.

The 30th of August the exhibit ALTERIDADES at the Jakob Karpio Gallery was opened to the public. This was my Solo exhibit of 2006. I presented three pieces and a video. I had the honor to share space with Carlos De Paz, an spanish artist mostly dedicated to painting. Isabel Rubio and Yamil de la Paz also exhibited their work. All of my pieces were made of rice, beans and corn, the basic diet of most Latin American and Caribbean countries, which are presentely being genetically modified.

PEJIBAYE PAL VIGORON - SAL A LA SOPA

Last thursday the openning of Pejibaye pal Vigoron, took place at the Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporaneo (MADC) in San Jose.
Artists from Spain, Nicaragua and Costa Rica got together for this event where difference was celebrated.
I presented my piece Forsalismo a word derived from For Sale. This was mostly made of cement and grass. 4 meters diameter.

Landings 3

Last July Landings* 3 took place at the Centro Leon in Santiago de los Caballeros, Republica Dominicana. It was an amazing experience thanks to the professionalism of Sarah Hermann, Angela Garcia and the members of this institution. They count with an important data base center for Caribbean and Central American Art, and they keep growing.

The Landings team worked hard and was very please to meet again... we will have Landings 4 in my country at the MADC in March 2007. I will let you know!
